Help is Right Next Door
Posted On 5/19/2010
At last, Karl Kindschi and Bill Greenhalgh know who to contact when clients seek referrals: Each other.
Kindschi is a longtime financial planner who, when clients began asking about wills and trusts, had to work the phones looking for a nearby attorney specializing in estates.
Greenhalgh is a longtime estate planning attorney who, when clients began seeking advice about insurance and investments, had to get on the horn in search of a local financial adviser.
Today, their referrals involve pointing clients down the hall. Kindschi and Greenhalgh have joined forces in a SagePoint Financial office at 202 Broadway, the same building that houses Greenhalgh's law firm.
"My dream was always to have in this office a financial planner," Greenhalgh said.
Greenhalgh Legal Services and SagePoint Financial are neighbors, but they are separate businesses. Like Kindschi, Greenhalgh is a registered representative of SagePoint, a national independent broker-dealer. But when Greenhalgh found himself struggling to keep up with his law practice and his investment services enterprise, he sought help.
"It's just too much to do," Greenhalgh said.
Kindschi was an ideal choice, as the two had known each other for years and had presented seminars together. They partnered in August. In January, Kindschi moved his office from Portage.
If Kindschi's clients need a will written, or Greenhalgh's clients need their portfolios reviewed, they can obtain those services without leaving the building. "We thought, ‘Hey, that's kind of a cool combination,'" Kindschi said.
Such combinations are rare, as the government enforces strict regulations for keeping legal and investment businesses distinct. Despite daunting red tape, Greenhalgh said lawyer-planner partnerships will become commonplace.
"It's really a way of presenting a package of services that will exceed (clients') expectations," Greenhalgh said. "We can do all of that under this roof."
The duo offers retirement planning, college savings and emergency funds, as well as insurance services and financial and estate planning.
Neither man has to worry that a client's interests will get lost in the shuffle after making a referral. Greenhalgh and Kindschi meet regularly to review clients' files and ensure follow-through. "To have somebody right here, it's a huge advantage," Greenhalgh said.
"It's a matter of saving people time, too," Kindschi noted. "It's been good for both of us, and particularly good for the clients."
